The Battle of the Brain vs the Belly – Who is winning?

In today’s world, we hear a lot of talk about “fight or flight” mode and stress, but we rarely talk about the alternative mode of “rest and digest”. Even more uncommon is the conversation regarding how these two states can influence digestion. Afterall, we do refer to a “knot in the stomach” or a “gut feeling” without fully understanding the reference.
When there is stress present, the mind sends a signal to the body that it needs all the energy it can get to address the situation at hand. This signal results in energy being taken away from processes such as growth, healing, hunger and digestion. If a child is in fight or flight mode around meals, they may experience pickier eating patterns, behavioral issues or digestive discomfort such as upset stomach or diarrhea.

By creating a safe space for mealtimes and healthy coping skills in our children, we allow for more rest and digest mode. Create a calm environment where children can slow down, chew their food and tune in to the body’s true responses and needs. The body will become better at managing energy properly and kids will be inclined to explore new foods without adrenaline’s influence.
