Mindful eating is a practice that has been around for ages but has recently caught more traction in the nutrition world. Introducing mindful eating to our children can impact and empower them in many areas of life both at and away from the dinner table.
So, what do we mean by mindful eating? It is a When a child learns the skill, that they can learn, s to tune-in and use their senses during mealtimes, which it enhances their ability to focus and connect the mind with the body. Strengthening the mind-body connection allows children to better understand their feelings and needs, which can support healthy coping skills in uncomfortable situations. Within the meal, a child learns to better explore their likes and dislikes of certain foods allowing for a better variety of nutrients needed for growth.
It is important to step back from the typical way of thinking around mealtimes and understand how it can impact a child’s mental and physical wellbeing. Setting the stage to support and encourage a child to be present during a meal can lead to better emotional regulation, focus in school and overall wellbeing.
