Get SMART about setting goals

While it is easy and inspiring to set goals, following through them can be challenging. This is why SMART goals are proven to be highly effective (SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based). At Niroggi, we facilitate setting SMART goals for you and your child to get the best results through our app and program. However, in your own time, you can also set SMART goals for yourself and your child to improve different domains of your life. For example, if you find it difficult to find time to have meals together as a family, you can create a SMART goal for this.

  • Specific – Make your goal specific and narrow. For example, we will have a home-cooked dinner together as a family, at least twice a week Monday through Friday.
  • Measurable – Make sure your goal and progress are measurable. How will you measure this? Maybe a calendar in a common area? Or you can keep track of it on your phone? Or you could delegate and ask your child to help keep track.
  • Achievable – Make sure you can reasonably accomplish your goal. Does your partner work night shifts? If so, do you need to consider having meals together on the weekends? Or exclude their participation from this goal?
  • Relevant – Your goal should align with your long-term objectives. How will this goal affect your child’s overall well-being and weight loss? Will this give you time to bond with your family over a healthy meal?
  • Time-based – Set a realistic but ambitious end date to increase motivation. Are you going on vacation or a work trip in the next couple of weeks? If so, maybe you can wait to implement this goal
